One of the most common diagnostic tools on a boiler is the gauge glass. Through this device, boiler operators can determine both the water level and the general condition of the water in the boiler. The gauge glass is also important when blowing a boiler down. By observing water levels, an operator can judge how much water has left the boiler and how much needs to be added.

As much as boiler gauge glasses help, they can also be a problem for boiler owners and operators. Repair requires that the boiler to be off line, the gauge removed, disassembled, cleaned, new parts installed, put back on the boiler. This is a very expensive procedure, especially when you add in the cost of lost production.

The flat gauge glass design allows for easier observation of the water level in your boiler. The reflex gauge has a single vision slot in which light can enter the gauge chamber to determine liquid level. Above the boiler water level, glass prisms reflect the surrounding light. Below the boiler water level the liquid fills the prisms causing the glass to be transparent.

Light striking the area of glass covered by the boiler water is allowed to pass through to the interior of the gage along the entire length of the covered prism. The light is reflected from the back of the chamber to the boiler operator. Typically the chamber appears dark. 

Light striking the area of the glass above the boiler water level is reflected instead of passing through to the back of the chamber. This produces a silver appearance in the glass. The water level in the chamber is represented where the silver and dark/opaque area meet. 
Transparent gauges have a vision slot on both sides of the chamber. Light enters the gauge from the side opposite the observer so that both the level of the boiler water and its characteristics can be seen. These gauges can also be supplied with illumination to make it easier to read in a dark boiler room.
